Clients ask about green products for three different reasons — a child crawling on the floor, a respiratory condition, or an environmental preference — and those three reasons point toward slightly different answers. Lumping them together is why so much of the advice online is unhelpful.
Here is what holds up in daily professional use, with the limitations stated plainly.
What "green" actually means on a label
Almost nothing, on its own. "Green", "natural", "eco" and "non-toxic" are unregulated marketing terms in the United States. A product can carry all four and still contain an ingredient you would rather not aerosolise around an infant.
Third-party certifications carry more weight because they require ingredient disclosure and testing against published criteria. Safer Choice, administered by the EPA, and Green Seal are the two most commonly seen on products that do real work. Their presence is not a guarantee of performance, but it does mean somebody outside the manufacturer reviewed the formula.
One genuinely important safety note that has nothing to do with green products: never mix cleaning products, and be especially careful with bleach. Bleach combined with ammonia or with an acidic cleaner produces toxic gas. This is the most common serious cleaning injury in homes, and it is entirely avoidable.
Where plant-based products perform well
For general soil — the everyday mixture of dust, skin cells, food residue and light grease that makes up most of what a cleaner removes — well-formulated plant-based surfactants perform indistinguishably from conventional ones. This covers the large majority of a typical visit.
- Counters, tables and general hard surfaces
- Sealed hardwood, laminate and luxury vinyl floors
- Glass and mirrors, where a plain alcohol-and-water solution outperforms most branded products
- Bathroom surfaces on a maintenance rhythm, before scale hardens
- Dusting, where the cloth does the work and the product barely matters
Microfibre deserves specific mention. A quality microfibre cloth used damp removes a substantial share of surface bacteria mechanically, with no chemistry at all. On a maintenance visit, the cloth is doing more of the work than most people assume.

Three jobs where they fall short
Hardened kitchen grease
Grease that has polymerised — the tacky amber film on a range hood or the wall behind a cooktop — needs a strongly alkaline degreaser. Plant-based alternatives will lift some of it with enough passes, but on a deep clean where time is the cost, a proper degreaser is both faster and less abrasive to the surface than repeated scrubbing.
Mineral scale and hard water
Limescale is calcium carbonate and it dissolves in acid. Vinegar is an acid and it does genuinely work on light scale. On heavy build-up around a faucet base or on shower glass, a purpose-made acidic descaler works in one application where vinegar needs several and a great deal of scrubbing.
Mould on porous surfaces
This one is widely misunderstood. Nothing sprayed on mouldy caulk removes mould permanently, green or conventional. Bleach lightens the visible surface while the growth continues underneath. The actual fix is cutting out the caulk and replacing it, and no product substitutes for that.
Cleaning versus disinfecting
These are two different operations and conflating them causes most of the confusion in this area. Cleaning removes soil and, with it, the majority of microorganisms. Disinfecting kills what remains on an already-clean surface. Disinfecting a dirty surface largely does not work, because the soil shields the organisms from the product.
For a typical home, thorough cleaning is sufficient for most surfaces. Disinfection is worth doing on genuine high-touch points and after illness — door handles, light switches, faucet handles, toilet flush levers, remotes and shared phones. Hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid based disinfectants are registered, effective and considerably gentler than what most households reach for.

Dwell time matters more than the product
If there is one thing worth taking from this article, it is this. Every disinfectant has a contact time printed on the label — the number of minutes the surface must stay visibly wet for the product to do what it claims. It is commonly between one and ten minutes.
Spraying and immediately wiping does not disinfect. It cleans, which is useful, but it is not what the label describes. A cheaper product used with correct dwell time outperforms an expensive one wiped off after five seconds, every time.
What we bring to a home
Our default kit is a plant-based general cleaner for most surfaces, a neutral pH floor cleaner, alcohol and water for glass, and a registered peroxide-based disinfectant for high-touch points. That combination handles the overwhelming majority of a maintenance visit.
For deep cleans we add an alkaline degreaser and an acidic descaler, because the results are meaningfully better and the exposure is brief and ventilated. If you have a specific requirement — fragrance-free for asthma, no acids on unsealed stone, a product you already trust — tell us and we work to it. It is your home, and it is genuinely easier to accommodate that up front than to discuss it afterwards.
Common questions
Generally safer than conventional alternatives, but not automatically safe. Some essential oils used as fragrance in natural products, tea tree and pine among them, are toxic to cats. Fragrance-free formulations are the safer default in a home with animals.
For light limescale and glass, it performs well and cheaply. For grease it is weak, and it should never go on natural stone, unsealed grout or waxed wood, where the acid causes etching. It is a useful tool with a narrow range, not a universal cleaner.
Yes, and it is a common request. Leave them out with a note about which surfaces each one is for. The only thing we will decline is using a product on a surface it will visibly damage — we will flag it and ask rather than proceed.
